Weight alone is a noisy signal. Hydration, muscle gain, and meal timing all shift the scale day to day. Pairing it with a few other numbers gives a fuller picture of health and fitness progress.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI relates weight to height. It is a population screening tool, not a body-fat test.

When it misleads

Athletes and very muscular people may read as overweight despite low body fat. Older adults may read normal while carrying excess fat — context matters.

Waist circumference

Fat stored around the abdomen is linked to higher metabolic risk for many people. Measure at navel level, exhale normally, do not suck in.

General guidance

Many guidelines flag increased risk above about 40 inches (102 cm) for men and 35 inches (88 cm) for women — ask your clinician for personal targets.
